Coming off a pretty stellar performance last week against Denver, the Patriots will have their hands full with a Seattle defense that has been causing problems for everyone this year.
The Seahawks have only given up 70 points in the first five weeks of the season, second only to the 49ers. They are 5th in the league with 16 sacks We saw on Monday Night Football a couple of weeks ago just how good this defense can be when it dismantled the Green Bay offense with a bunch of sacks in the second half to come out with the controversial win. And of course Pete Carroll will be on the other sideline. There is no doubting he has done some good things in Seattle since he showed up.
However, it will be the Patriots who come out on top of this game on Sunday. However, New England will have to go back to the old school Brady days of sticking with the passing game. Even with the new Patriots ground game they have started the season with, Seattle is only giving up 66 rushing yards a game. The Seahawks front four are just too good.
This game will strictly be on Tom Brady. He will have to continue his success of recent weeks with Wes Welker to be successful in this game. After two weeks of “Is Welker done in New England?” talks, we have seen the real Welker come out in recent weeks, especially in the absence of Aaron Hernandez.
Brandon Lloyd isn’t having the huge year he’s used to, but that is because he comes from two teams (Denver Broncos and St. Louis Rams) where he is normally the ONLY receiver. Now he is in a system that has a bunch of receivers and tight-ends. I can see this as his breakout game, as Seattle might start to focus on Welker with his success of past weeks, leaving Lloyd in one-on-one situations, which he should be able to strive in. As long as the Patriots running-game is on top of things like they normally on, they should be good to put up 28-plus points in this game.
As off-and-on as the Patriots defense has been to start the year, they shouldn’t have much trouble with the Seattle offense, which ranks 31st in the league, averaging just 147 passing yards a game. Only the Jacksonville Jaguars average fewer yards a game. So worrying about Russell Wilson and the Seahawks shady receiving core, should not be high on the Patriots defensive priority list.
However, the Patriots will need their defensive line of Vince Wilfork, Rob Ninkovich and Chandler Jones to help shut down Marshawn Lynch. Lynch has been straight “beast-mode” as he is averaging 140 yards a game to start the season.
Overall, I see a huge game coming from Brady and his receivers and the Patriots defense will minimize the run-game of Lynch. Patriots win 31-13.
